Reading Synopses Ch. 1-2 (Pages 1-17) Nov. 8: In the first Chapter of Number the Stars, Annemarie wanted to practice for her school's race on Friday by practicing with her friend Ellen. They raced home from school and through a whole crowd of people until two German officers stopped them in their tracks. The officers gave a serious talking to the three girls (Including Kirsti who was Annemarie's sister) about how running home can make them look like hoodlums. After, talking to the girls they walked the rest of the way home. Kirsti then told her parents. The three were then told by Mrs.Johansen (Annemarie's mom) to walk a different and longer path from that point forward so they don't run into any soldiers. In the second chapter Annemarie was telling bedtime stories to her little sister Kirsti about King Christian X (The King of Denmark). Annemarie then told a Kirsti about how their parents would do anything to protect King Christian from harm. But then Annemarie told Kirsti they once had an older sister named Lise. She was killed two weeks before her marriage. She was going to marry a man named Peter.
Ch.3-5 (Pages 18-38) Nov.9: In the third chapter Annemarie was missing a button on one of her shirts so she went to Mrs. Hirsh's button store, but Mrs. Hirsh wasn't there and the store was closed. That night Peter (Lise's fiance) came to visit the Johansen's. He had bad news. The Nazis decided to torment the Danish Jews by shutting down all of the Danish Jew's stores. The Johansen's live in an apartment. The lower level is where Ellen lives and her whole family is Jewish. So they are afraid the German soldiers were going to torment them in some way. In the Fourth Chapter, Ellen's family moved out of the neighborhood so the German Soldiers would not find them. The Johansen's were kind enough to let Ellen stay with them. In the Fifth chapter, at four in the morning three German Soldiers came to the Johansen house to see if the Rosen's were home but they weren't. So the Soldiers looked if they were hiding in the Johansens house. The soldiers made all of the girls wake up and line up. (Ellen was pretending to be Lise) They questioned Ellen a lot because of her black hair and no one in the Johansen family has black hair so they were very suspicious. They even made the Johansens pull out an old scrap book. Luckily when Lise was a baby in these photos she had black hair. After seeing the scrap book the German soldiers left and Ellen was fine.
Vinny, Peter was Lise's fiance. They were not married yet.
Ch.6-7 (Pages 52-66) Nov.10: In Chapter 6 the Johansen's decide it would be to risky for Ellen to go to school because German officers might be there. So Johansen's decide to visit their Uncle Henrik and they all got to his house by train. They happened to meet up with a German Soldier on the train who asked the Johansens if they were celebrating the Jewish New Year. (Which was in October but the normal New Year, for Christians was in January and it was October in the story right now) But Mrs. Johansen said to the soldier she did not know it was the Jewish New Year yet it was only October. (Mrs. Johansen was a good actor for Ellen) Ellen luckily was fine because of Mrs. Johansen, and the soldiers moved on. To end the Chapter they all got off the train and were headed for Annemarie's Uncle's house. In the Seventh Chapter, the Johansen's finally arrive at Annemarie's Uncle Henrik's house by the Baltic Sea. (The four of them had to walk two miles from the train station to get to Uncle Henrik's house) When they got near the Baltic sea Ellen mentions that she wasn't near much water very often because her mom was afraid of it. So they're family never went near it. (They were more of a "city" family) Ch.8-9 (Pages 67-81) Nov.11: In the eighth chapter it was morning and Uncle Henrik headed for the barn with his milking pail to milk the cows. The rest of the family cleaned up Uncle Henrik's house by picking flowers outside and putting them in vases on a table. They also mopped the floors, cleaned Henrik's clothes on his clothes line, moved the furniture around to make room, washed the windows, and dusted off the furniture. But, all the girls did not know why they were cleaning. That night Uncle Henrik came back from the barn and saw his new house. He was pleased but Mama (Mrs. Johansen) thinks he needs a wife to clean his house not his sister. Annemarie was still curious to why they cleaned the house so, she asked her mom. Mama said their Great Aunt Birte died so they were going to have her casket stay in the living room before she was actually buried tomorrow. It was a custom of their family's. But the thing was Annemarie never recalled of a Great Aunt Birte and never heard of her in any of the stories her mama told to her. Later, she figured out both Mama and Uncle Henrik was lying to her. In the Ninth Chapter, Annemarie asked her Uncle Henrik about her Great Aunt Birte when he was milking his cow. Uncle Henrik then asked how brave she really was but she confessed that she wasn't very brave. Uncle Henrik then told her it is much easier being brave if you don't know everything. She didn't know what he was talking about at first but then she recalled the time when she approached the German Soldier on the street. (She didn't know that the Germans taking away the Jews) So it was easier for her to be brave when she didn't know anything. Then she understood. That is why both Mama and Henrik were lying to her. That night people started to arrive at Uncle Henrik's house to see "Great Aunt Birte" one more time before she was buried. Then, Mama told Ellen to follow Uncle Henrik outside she wanted Ellen to see something. Suddenly, Peter Neilsen walked through the door with Mr. and Mrs. Rosen and Ellen standing next to them. Ch.10-11 (Pages 82-94) Nov.13: In Chapter ten everyone has finally arrived at Henrik's house. But, Uncle Henrik was not at the house, he was by sea getting the boat ready for "Fishing". Then, all of a sudden everyone hears a knock at the door. It was some German soldiers. They accused Mama of having too many people in one area. But she said there was a death in their family and every time there was a death it was a custom that people gather and give there respects. So the officer asked Annemarie who died. (This was the part Annemarie should have bravery because she didn't know much) She lied firmly to the officer and said her Great Aunt Birte died. The German Soldier wanted to open the casket but Mama said the casket was closed because Aunt Birte died of Typhus and nobody wanted the germs to get out on to them. Mama challenged the officer to open the casket. The officer then slapped Mama for even bringing up the fact of opening the casket for the germs to go on the officer. Then, the officer left the house and they resumed the opening of the casket. In Chapter eleven Peter open the casket and inside was not a body but clothing for the winter months. They passed the warm clothing around to everyone at the house. Later, Peter hands a package to Mr. Rosen in the kitchen, and tells him to give it to Henrik without fail because it was very important. Peter couldn't deliver the package because he had to lead the rest of the people at the house to the harbor. Next, Peter told Mama to lead the Rosen's to the boat by the harbor and send them on there way to Henrik. Then, Peter left the house with the other people at the party. (not including the Rosens) They had to leave with only what they had which was just the clothing and some food from Henrik's farm. Annemarie then realized her Uncle Henrik was going to take the Rosens to Sweden by boat. And she also figured out it would be tough since Mrs. Rosen was afraid of water and the whole Rosen family was afraid of there future. Ch.12-14 (Pages 95-112) Nov.14: In the Twelfth chapter Mama took the Rosen's down to the harbor. But, right before they left they all hugged Annemarie and said goodbye. Ellen promised Annemarie she would come back to Denmark someday. Then they left. There arms were full of as much food and clothing as possible. Then, Annemarie went back inside the house and traced the path they were taking in her mind. It was two-thirty in the morning right now. Annemarie thought her mother would be home in about an hour. (Around three-thirty) then, Annemarie fell asleep. In an hour and a have (At four o'clock) she woke up and noticed the time. She didn't know where her mom was. She looked all over her house. She couldn't find her. Finally, Annemarie looked out the window. There was a dark shape at the beginning of the path. Then, Annemarie knew it was her mom lying on the Earth. In the Thirteenth chapter Annemarie rushes as fast as she could to get to her mother without waking her younger sister Kirsti who was still sleeping. When Annemarie got to her mother, her mother said she was fine but she thought she broke her ankle. Because, on her way back from dropping off the Rosens she rushed back as fast as she could to take care of Annemarie and Kirsti. But, she unfortunately tripped over a root, hidden by some leaves when she was almost halfway to the house. Mama thought she might have broken her ankle. Mama thought she was the clumsiest person in the world. Annemarie then helped Mama get back up and get her back to the house. Mama was going to call the doctor right when she got inside. When they both reached the house Mama took a deep breath, she was very tired from dragging herself for such a long time. Then, Annemarie looked down at Mama's swollen ankle when she saw the package that Mr. Rosen was suppose to give to Uncle Henrik. Mama quickly ordered Annemarie to go back inside and put the package in a small basket and put some apples, a sandwich, cheese and a napkin to cover the package so it is not visible, and if she passed any soldiers, they wouldn't expect anything. Then, Mama said if Annemarie does run into any soldiers she should act like a silly little girl. Instantly she ran to the kitchen and did as her mother asked. When Annemarie came back outside Mama told Annemarie to run to the harbor as fast as she could to try to deliver the package to Uncle Henrik before he leaves with the Rosens. In chapter fourteen, Annemarie is sprinting to try to deliver the package. But while she running there are many obstacles like the weeds that her mother tripped on, all the different forks, curves, and bends in the road, and it was still only four-thirty so it was still very dark. But to pass time Annemarie remembered the time she told the story little red riding hood to her little sister Kristi at bedtime. Annemarie decided to tell the story to herself while she is running. But, sometimes when she got to the part of the story where the scarier parts were she would be paranoid and imagine them in real life. (like the part of the story where the wolf pops out of a bush and scares little red riding hood) Annemarie was almost there, there was just one turn ahead but, then she heard something and it wasn't her imagination this time. Suddenly, Annemarie turned the path and in front of her were four German soldiers with two huge dogs at their sides. Ch.15-16 (Pages 113-127) Nov.15: Annemarie was very nervous, but she remembered to act like a silly little girl. So she decided to act as much like her little sister Kirsti as possible. The soldiers interrogated her and asked her many questions. The soldiers asked her where she was going. She said she had to drop off her uncle's lunch because he forgot it. He was a fisherman she told them. One soldier stepped toward Annemarie, and reached for the bread in her basket. Then, he tore it in half and through the two halves to the two dogs to eat. Annemarie told him to stop but the soldier disregarded the comment. Next, the soldier took out the cheese and then the apple. Annemarie said stop taking stuff out of her basket before she doesn't have anything to give her Uncle for lunch. Then the soldier asked why she didn't have any meat in the lunch. She said it was because she didn't have any since there army had taken all of it. The soldier dropped the apple, and the soldier laughed and said his dogs smell meat, where was her meat. In Annemarie's mind she thought please, please, don't pick up the napkin because then he would see the package. The soldier then picked up the napkin with one hand and the other hand still holding the cheese. He saw the package, and then handed the cheese and napkin to the soldier holding the dogs. Annemarie started to cry thinking of what Kristi would do. She said that everyone was going to be mad at her because she didn't give the basket to her Uncle Henrik. The soldier opened the packet and inside was a handkerchief. Finally, the soldier dropped the handkerchief and put the cheese and napkin inside her basket again. The soldiers then carried on with their walk. Annemarie started to sprint again around the bend and then to Uncle Henrik. When she got there Uncle Henrik was thankfully still there but the Rosens weren't there. Henrik then thanked Annemarie and said every thing was going to be all right now that she delivered the handkerchief. In chapter sixteen, Uncle Henrik returned from the boat and had dinner with Annemarie, Kirsti, and Mama. Once they were done, Uncle Henrik went to the barn with Annemarie to give some milking lessons on Blossom. (Uncle Henrik's cow) When the two of them got there Annemarie asked where the Rosens and the others were because she thought he was supposed to be on his way to Sweden with them. He said this was another bravery secret he shouldn't tell her but he decided to anyway. He only was going to tell her a little. What happened was many fishermen in Copenhagen built hidden places underneath their boats to hide Jews. She then asked if they were hiding down there in the morning and if they heard her talking to Henrik. Uncle Henrik said they did. Uncle Henrik then said now all German soldiers were looking in all the boats by the Baltic Sea because they have found out many Jews have fled Denmark and were gone. He also said that now the soldiers have dogs that are trained to sniff out human scent. And the reason the Handkerchief was so important was because it had a drug inside of it that ruins the smell of the dogs. This is why the soldier thought Annemarie had meat in her basket. And since Peter was part of the Resistance he was able to make this handkerchief was able to make it for Uncle Henrik. That's why he handed it to Mr. Rosen, to give to Uncle Henrik. Luckily, Annemarie gave the handkerchief to Uncle Henrik right in time because twenty minutes later a soldier came up to Uncle Henrik and since he had the handkerchief he was able to ruin the dogs scent and the soldiers didn't expect anything. Annemarie petty much saved the Rosens. Now they're all in Sweden now and they are all safe. Then, Annemarie thought about when she would possibly see Ellen again. Your synopses are quite detailed which is not expected in a synopsis; however, your writing indicates that you seem to like the book and are putting a lot of effort into recording information about it.Ch.17 (Pages 128-132) Nov.16: In the last chapter of Number The Stars,chapter seventeen, the war has ended two years ago and Annemarie is twelve. There was a parade going through Copenhagen. Since the Rosens were gone the Johansens cleaned there apartment as a sign of friendship. Peter Neilson had died. He was captured by Nazi soldiers, then he was shot that night in front of the public square where every one could see. That night after the parade, Mrs. and Mr. Johansen told Annemarie the story of how Lise really died. They said Lise was with Peter in a cellar, where they held secret meetings in the Resistance. Nazi soldiers found out about the meetings and raided the place. Many soldiers were shot. Peter was shot in the arm but Lise wasn't shot at all. She was run over by German soldiers in a military car. At that moment Annemarie noticed the Resistance was a very helpful group that fought for Denmark but sometimes they had to take life threatening risks to try to save Denmark. Then, Annemarie went to her room. In a chest that held all of Lise's wedding dresses was where Annemarie hid Ellen's Star of David necklace, but when Annemarie looked inside the chest, it was still there and then she know Ellen never got the necklace back. Annemarie ran to her father to ask him how she could possible get this back to Ellen. He said Annemarie just had to wait until Ellen came back to Copenhagen. Then, Annemarie vowed to not stop wearing Ellen's necklace until then.Afterward (Pages 132-137) Nov.18: In the afterward, we the readers found out the Johansen family, the Rosen family, and Uncle Henrik were all figments of the Lois Lowery's imagination. But, Peter Neilson was based one a real person who fought in the resistance but isn't actually real. And all the streets and places Lowery mentioned in the story are streets still being walked on by Danes, today. Annemarie Johansen grew a lot from Lowery's inspiration, Lois's friend Annelise Platt to whom this book was dedicated to. Annelise grew up in Copenhagen during the horrible years of the occupation over Denmark. Lois loved Annelise's description of her life in Copenhagen. But there was one part where she explained how everyone in Copenhagen loved there wonderful King Christian X and he always tried to look out for his people and his people would do the same to him. But the one night the Germans wanted to take over Denmark he had no choice, Denmark didn't have a good army to fight with so he had to surrender the whole country. But the one thing that the Germans didn't control was King Christian himself. It is true that King Christian always rode through the city with his horse. It was also true that the Germans were going to relocate the Jews so they all fled into to the arms of the Danes, who took care of them. And on the day of the Jewish New Year almost all of the Jews who lived in Denmark sailed across the Baltic Sea to Sweden where they were free. The handkerchief was also a fact of history. Many of those handy items saved many Jewish lives. Many people in the Resistance were extremely brave people. In particular the author mentioned a man by the name of Kim Malthe-Bruun who was part of the Resistance. He died at twenty-one but served Denmark with all of his heart. She read on, and then Lois saw his picture on the next page she read about. Seeing him made her tear up because of the determination in his eyes. That made her think of the possibility of the gift of the world of human decency. Which is still possible. Many countries today, still hunger for that gift. The End.
Comparison & ContrastBetweenAnnemarie & Ellen Ellen is a ten year old Jewish girl who lives in Copenhagen, Denmark with her best friend Annemarie. Annemarie is a ten year old Christian girl who lives in Copenhagen, Denmark with her best friend Ellen. Ellen has both a mom and a dad, but she doesn't have any siblings or relatives in the story. Annemarie has a mom, a dad, and two sisters. One is named Kirsti, and she is the little sister. The other sister is named Lise, and she was the older sister. Lise unfortunately died. Annemarie also has an Uncle Henrik and a very close friend named Peter. He was Lise's fiance before she died; Peter was not Lise's husband. Ellen has black hair, but Annemarie has blond hair. Ellen and Annemarie both live in the same apartment but Ellen lives in the downstairs apartment and Annemarie lives in the upstairs apartment. Ellen is much slower than Annemarie, but Annemarie is much faster that Ellen. Ellen and Annemarie both attend the same school. Their town was invaded by Nazi soldiers. Ellen has a Star of David necklace, but Annemarie doesn't have a necklace to wear. Ellen is shyer, but Annemarie is very brave. Ellen has blue eyes, but Annemarie has brown eyes. Annemarie and Ellen both live in a town ruled over by King Christian. Ellen celebrates her New Year in October because she's Jewish, but Annemarie celebrates her New Year in January because she is Christian. And finally, Ellen's family was more of a city family, but Annemarie's family is more of a country or farming family. Annemarie family isn't afraid to get dirty. No, Annemarie's family also lived in the city; it was her uncle who lived in rural Denmark. Otherwise, you came up with great comparisions and contrasts between the two characters.
Setting The setting of the first five chapters took place in 1943 in Copenhagen, Denmark right around the time the German Soldiers took over the streets of Denmark. Annemarie lives in a double apartment. (She lives in the upstairs floor) The downstairs apartment is where her friend Ellen lives. The second setting of the story was at Annemarie's Uncle Henrik's house by the Baltic sea in the town of Gilleje. It is also a great place to go for Ellen because if something went wrong Ellen could just sail to Sweden which is right across the Baltic Sea. And Sweden is not occupied by German/ Nazi soldiers. Good descriptions! Plot LineExposition- The Exposition takes place in 1943 in Copenhagen Denmark, and Uncle Henrik's house in Gilleje. Initiating Incident- The Initiating Incident occurs when Annemarie and Ellen run into the German soldiers. Rising Conflict 1- The Rising Conflict is that the Germans were relocating the all Jews in Denmark. Rising Conflict 2- A second Rising Conflict could be when the German soldiers get a list of all the Jews in every synagogue in Denmark. So the Rosens are forced to move out of Copenhagen. Climax- The Climax happens when gets past the German soldiers in the woods when she's on her way to Uncle Henrik's boat. And since Annemarie dropped off the Handkerchief that through off human scent from the dogs noses, they didn't find the Rosens and moved on to the next boat. Then Annemarie and Uncle Henrik knew the Rosens were safe. Resolution- The Resolution happens in the book when the Rosens escape Denmark and Uncle Henrik lead them to Sweden. Exposition, climax and resolution are good, but initiating incident is incorrect (initiating incident) and there are many more conflicts than just two you listed.
Theme One Theme of Number the Stars could be Bravery because in the book the Johansens keep trying and trying to find different ways to get the Rosens to Sweden. But they couldn't have accomplished this mission without everyone's bravery. And with bravery the Johansens saved the Rosens lives because if the Johansens didn't have bravery the Rosens could have been caught by the German Soldiers and have been "Relocated". Bravery occurs in the story when the Annemarie has approached German soldiers in the past. Uncle Henrik's way of looking at bravery is if you don't know much about something you can have bravery and if you're scared about something but you do it anyway, that is bravery. Annemarie was very brave in Number the Star at numerous times and because of her bravery she saved her best friend Ellen from being captured by the German Soldiers.A second Theme could be Standing Up For What Is Right because in Number the Stars the Johansens didn't have to help the Rosens, they did it because it was the right thing to do. Another example is how Peter and Lise both gave there lives for Denmark by fighting for the Resistance. They both didn't have to they thought it would be generous to serve their country. Plus, they both weren't even Jewish. Bravery is the topic of a theme, but what is Lois Lowry saying about what bravery is by writing this plot?

Ch.10-11 (Pages 82-94) Nov.13: In Chapter ten everyone has finally arrived at Henrik's house. But, Uncle Henrik was not at the house, he was by sea getting the boat ready for "Fishing". Then, all of a sudden everyone hears a knock at the door. It was some German soldiers. They accused Mama of having too many people in one area. But she said there was a death in their family and every time there was a death it was a custom that people gather and give there respects. So the officer asked Annemarie who died. (This was the part Annemarie should have bravery because she didn't know much) She lied firmly to the officer and said her Great Aunt Birte died. The German Soldier wanted to open the casket but Mama said the casket was closed because Aunt Birte died of Typhus and nobody wanted the germs to get out on to them. Mama challenged the officer to open the casket. The officer then slapped Mama for even bringing up the fact of opening the casket for the germs to go on the officer. Then, the officer left the house and they resumed the opening of the casket. In Chapter eleven Peter open the casket and inside was not a body but clothing for the winter months. They passed the warm clothing around to everyone at the house. Later, Peter hands a package to Mr. Rosen in the kitchen, and tells him to give it to Henrik without fail because it was very important. Peter couldn't deliver the package because he had to lead the rest of the people at the house to the harbor. Next, Peter told Mama to lead the Rosen's to the boat by the harbor and send them on there way to Henrik. Then, Peter left the house with the other people at the party. (not including the Rosens) They had to leave with only what they had which was just the clothing and some food from Henrik's farm. Annemarie then realized her Uncle Henrik was going to take the Rosens to Sweden by boat. And she also figured out it would be tough since Mrs. Rosen was afraid of water and the whole Rosen family was afraid of there future. Ch.12-14 (Pages 95-112) Nov.14: In the Twelfth chapter Mama took the Rosen's down to the harbor. But, right before they left they all hugged Annemarie and said goodbye. Ellen promised Annemarie she would come back to Denmark someday. Then they left. There arms were full of as much food and clothing as possible. Then, Annemarie went back inside the house and traced the path they were taking in her mind. It was two-thirty in the morning right now. Annemarie thought her mother would be home in about an hour. (Around three-thirty) then, Annemarie fell asleep. In an hour and a have (At four o'clock) she woke up and noticed the time. She didn't know where her mom was. She looked all over her house. She couldn't find her. Finally, Annemarie looked out the window. There was a dark shape at the beginning of the path. Then, Annemarie knew it was her mom lying on the Earth. In the Thirteenth chapter Annemarie rushes as fast as she could to get to her mother without waking her younger sister Kirsti who was still sleeping. When Annemarie got to her mother, her mother said she was fine but she thought she broke her ankle. Because, on her way back from dropping off the Rosens she rushed back as fast as she could to take care of Annemarie and Kirsti. But, she unfortunately tripped over a root, hidden by some leaves when she was almost halfway to the house. Mama thought she might have broken her ankle. Mama thought she was the clumsiest person in the world. Annemarie then helped Mama get back up and get her back to the house. Mama was going to call the doctor right when she got inside. When they both reached the house Mama took a deep breath, she was very tired from dragging herself for such a long time. Then, Annemarie looked down at Mama's swollen ankle when she saw the package that Mr. Rosen was suppose to give to Uncle Henrik. Mama quickly ordered Annemarie to go back inside and put the package in a small basket and put some apples, a sandwich, cheese and a napkin to cover the package so it is not visible, and if she passed any soldiers, they wouldn't expect anything. Then, Mama said if Annemarie does run into any soldiers she should act like a silly little girl. Instantly she ran to the kitchen and did as her mother asked. When Annemarie came back outside Mama told Annemarie to run to the harbor as fast as she could to try to deliver the package to Uncle Henrik before he leaves with the Rosens. In chapter fourteen, Annemarie is sprinting to try to deliver the package. But while she running there are many obstacles like the weeds that her mother tripped on, all the different forks, curves, and bends in the road, and it was still only four-thirty so it was still very dark. But to pass time Annemarie remembered the time she told the story little red riding hood to her little sister Kristi at bedtime. Annemarie decided to tell the story to herself while she is running. But, sometimes when she got to the part of the story where the scarier parts were she would be paranoid and imagine them in real life. (like the part of the story where the wolf pops out of a bush and scares little red riding hood) Annemarie was almost there, there was just one turn ahead but, then she heard something and it wasn't her imagination this time. Suddenly, Annemarie turned the path and in front of her were four German soldiers with two huge dogs at their sides. Ch.15-16 (Pages 113-127) Nov.15: Annemarie was very nervous, but she remembered to act like a silly little girl. So she decided to act as much like her little sister Kirsti as possible. The soldiers interrogated her and asked her many questions. The soldiers asked her where she was going. She said she had to drop off her uncle's lunch because he forgot it. He was a fisherman she told them. One soldier stepped toward Annemarie, and reached for the bread in her basket. Then, he tore it in half and through the two halves to the two dogs to eat. Annemarie told him to stop but the soldier disregarded the comment. Next, the soldier took out the cheese and then the apple. Annemarie said stop taking stuff out of her basket before she doesn't have anything to give her Uncle for lunch. Then the soldier asked why she didn't have any meat in the lunch. She said it was because she didn't have any since there army had taken all of it. The soldier dropped the apple, and the soldier laughed and said his dogs smell meat, where was her meat. In Annemarie's mind she thought please, please, don't pick up the napkin because then he would see the package. The soldier then picked up the napkin with one hand and the other hand still holding the cheese. He saw the package, and then handed the cheese and napkin to the soldier holding the dogs. Annemarie started to cry thinking of what Kristi would do. She said that everyone was going to be mad at her because she didn't give the basket to her Uncle Henrik. The soldier opened the packet and inside was a handkerchief. Finally, the soldier dropped the handkerchief and put the cheese and napkin inside her basket again. The soldiers then carried on with their walk. Annemarie started to sprint again around the bend and then to Uncle Henrik. When she got there Uncle Henrik was thankfully still there but the Rosens weren't there. Henrik then thanked Annemarie and said every thing was going to be all right now that she delivered the handkerchief. In chapter sixteen, Uncle Henrik returned from the boat and had dinner with Annemarie, Kirsti, and Mama. Once they were done, Uncle Henrik went to the barn with Annemarie to give some milking lessons on Blossom. (Uncle Henrik's cow) When the two of them got there Annemarie asked where the Rosens and the others were because she thought he was supposed to be on his way to Sweden with them. He said this was another bravery secret he shouldn't tell her but he decided to anyway. He only was going to tell her a little. What happened was many fishermen in Copenhagen built hidden places underneath their boats to hide Jews. She then asked if they were hiding down there in the morning and if they heard her talking to Henrik. Uncle Henrik said they did. Uncle Henrik then said now all German soldiers were looking in all the boats by the Baltic Sea because they have found out many Jews have fled Denmark and were gone. He also said that now the soldiers have dogs that are trained to sniff out human scent. And the reason the Handkerchief was so important was because it had a drug inside of it that ruins the smell of the dogs. This is why the soldier thought Annemarie had meat in her basket. And since Peter was part of the Resistance he was able to make this handkerchief was able to make it for Uncle Henrik. That's why he handed it to Mr. Rosen, to give to Uncle Henrik. Luckily, Annemarie gave the handkerchief to Uncle Henrik right in time because twenty minutes later a soldier came up to Uncle Henrik and since he had the handkerchief he was able to ruin the dogs scent and the soldiers didn't expect anything. Annemarie petty much saved the Rosens. Now they're all in Sweden now and they are all safe. Then, Annemarie thought about when she would possibly see Ellen again. Your synopses are quite detailed which is not expected in a synopsis; however, your writing indicates that you seem to like the book and are putting a lot of effort into recording information about it. Ch.17 (Pages 128-132) Nov.16: In the last chapter of Number The Stars,chapter seventeen, the war has ended two years ago and Annemarie is twelve. There was a parade going through Copenhagen. Since the Rosens were gone the Johansens cleaned there apartment as a sign of friendship. Peter Neilson had died. He was captured by Nazi soldiers, then he was shot that night in front of the public square where every one could see. That night after the parade, Mrs. and Mr. Johansen told Annemarie the story of how Lise really died. They said Lise was with Peter in a cellar, where they held secret meetings in the Resistance. Nazi soldiers found out about the meetings and raided the place. Many soldiers were shot. Peter was shot in the arm but Lise wasn't shot at all. She was run over by German soldiers in a military car. At that moment Annemarie noticed the Resistance was a very helpful group that fought for Denmark but sometimes they had to take life threatening risks to try to save Denmark. Then, Annemarie went to her room. In a chest that held all of Lise's wedding dresses was where Annemarie hid Ellen's Star of David necklace, but when Annemarie looked inside the chest, it was still there and then she know Ellen never got the necklace back. Annemarie ran to her father to ask him how she could possible get this back to Ellen. He said Annemarie just had to wait until Ellen came back to Copenhagen. Then, Annemarie vowed to not stop wearing Ellen's necklace until then. Afterward (Pages 132-137) Nov.18: In the afterward, we the readers found out the Johansen family, the Rosen family, and Uncle Henrik were all figments of the Lois Lowery's imagination. But, Peter Neilson was based one a real person who fought in the resistance but isn't actually real. And all the streets and places Lowery mentioned in the story are streets still being walked on by Danes, today. Annemarie Johansen grew a lot from Lowery's inspiration, Lois's friend Annelise Platt to whom this book was dedicated to. Annelise grew up in Copenhagen during the horrible years of the occupation over Denmark. Lois loved Annelise's description of her life in Copenhagen. But there was one part where she explained how everyone in Copenhagen loved there wonderful King Christian X and he always tried to look out for his people and his people would do the same to him. But the one night the Germans wanted to take over Denmark he had no choice, Denmark didn't have a good army to fight with so he had to surrender the whole country. But the one thing that the Germans didn't control was King Christian himself. It is true that King Christian always rode through the city with his horse. It was also true that the Germans were going to relocate the Jews so they all fled into to the arms of the Danes, who took care of them. And on the day of the Jewish New Year almost all of the Jews who lived in Denmark sailed across the Baltic Sea to Sweden where they were free. The handkerchief was also a fact of history. Many of those handy items saved many Jewish lives. Many people in the Resistance were extremely brave people. In particular the author mentioned a man by the name of Kim Malthe-Bruun who was part of the Resistance. He died at twenty-one but served Denmark with all of his heart. She read on, and then Lois saw his picture on the next page she read about. Seeing him made her tear up because of the determination in his eyes. That made her think of the possibility of the gift of the world of human decency. Which is still possible. Many countries today, still hunger for that gift. The End.
Comparison & ContrastBetween Annemarie & Ellen Ellen is a ten year old Jewish girl who lives in Copenhagen, Denmark with her best friend Annemarie. Annemarie is a ten year old Christian girl who lives in Copenhagen, Denmark with her best friend Ellen. Ellen has both a mom and a dad, but she doesn't have any siblings or relatives in the story. Annemarie has a mom, a dad, and two sisters. One is named Kirsti, and she is the little sister. The other sister is named Lise, and she was the older sister. Lise unfortunately died. Annemarie also has an Uncle Henrik and a very close friend named Peter. He was Lise's fiance before she died; Peter was not Lise's husband. Ellen has black hair, but Annemarie has blond hair. Ellen and Annemarie both live in the same apartment but Ellen lives in the downstairs apartment and Annemarie lives in the upstairs apartment. Ellen is much slower than Annemarie, but Annemarie is much faster that Ellen. Ellen and Annemarie both attend the same school. Their town was invaded by Nazi soldiers. Ellen has a Star of David necklace, but Annemarie doesn't have a necklace to wear. Ellen is shyer, but Annemarie is very brave. Ellen has blue eyes, but Annemarie has brown eyes. Annemarie and Ellen both live in a town ruled over by King Christian. Ellen celebrates her New Year in October because she's Jewish, but Annemarie celebrates her New Year in January because she is Christian. And finally, Ellen's family was more of a city family, but Annemarie's family is more of a country or farming family. Annemarie family isn't afraid to get dirty.
No, Annemarie's family also lived in the city; it was her uncle who lived in rural Denmark. Otherwise, you came up with great comparisions and contrasts between the two characters.
Setting The setting of the first five chapters took place in 1943 in Copenhagen, Denmark right around the time the German Soldiers took over the streets of Denmark. Annemarie lives in a double apartment. (She lives in the upstairs floor) The downstairs apartment is where her friend Ellen lives. The second setting of the story was at Annemarie's Uncle Henrik's house by the Baltic sea in the town of Gilleje. It is also a great place to go for Ellen because if something went wrong Ellen could just sail to Sweden which is right across the Baltic Sea. And Sweden is not occupied by German/ Nazi soldiers. Good descriptions!
Plot Line Exposition- The Exposition takes place in 1943 in Copenhagen Denmark, and Uncle Henrik's house in Gilleje.
Initiating Incident- The Initiating Incident occurs when Annemarie and Ellen run into the German soldiers.
Rising Conflict 1- The Rising Conflict is that the Germans were relocating the all Jews in Denmark.
Rising Conflict 2- A second Rising Conflict could be when the German soldiers get a list of all the Jews in every synagogue in Denmark. So the Rosens are forced to move out of Copenhagen.
Climax- The Climax happens when gets past the German soldiers in the woods when she's on her way to Uncle Henrik's boat. And since Annemarie dropped off the Handkerchief that through off human scent from the dogs noses, they didn't find the Rosens and moved on to the next boat. Then Annemarie and Uncle Henrik knew the Rosens were safe.
Resolution- The Resolution happens in the book when the Rosens escape Denmark and Uncle Henrik lead them to Sweden.
Exposition, climax and resolution are good, but initiating incident is incorrect (initiating incident) and there are many more conflicts than just two you listed.
Theme One Theme of Number the Stars could be Bravery because in the book the Johansens keep trying and trying to find different ways to get the Rosens to Sweden. But they couldn't have accomplished this mission without everyone's bravery. And with bravery the Johansens saved the Rosens lives because if the Johansens didn't have bravery the Rosens could have been caught by the German Soldiers and have been "Relocated". Bravery occurs in the story when the Annemarie has approached German soldiers in the past. Uncle Henrik's way of looking at bravery is if you don't know much about something you can have bravery and if you're scared about something but you do it anyway, that is bravery. Annemarie was very brave in Number the Star at numerous times and because of her bravery she saved her best friend Ellen from being captured by the German Soldiers.A second Theme could be Standing Up For What Is Right because in Number the Stars the Johansens didn't have to help the Rosens, they did it because it was the right thing to do. Another example is how Peter and Lise both gave there lives for Denmark by fighting for the Resistance. They both didn't have to they thought it would be generous to serve their country. Plus, they both weren't even Jewish.
